Peter and Lisa A Mental Illness Children Story Charles Katz Linda Baron Katz 9781478775126 Books Reviews
In some ways, understanding someone with an evident disability--blindness, cerebral palsy, missing limbs--is easy to understand. I'm not saying that someone without those disabilities can ever truly understand living with such a disability. But I can imagine what it means not to be able to see, or being unable to walk, or having a hand that I can't use.
It's the invisible disabilities that are more difficult to understand. Someone who is not bipolar, or who does not suffer from depression, may not be as quick to recognize how powerful and debilitating these disabilities can be. Charles Katz and Linda Baron Katz, who suffer from depression and bipolar disorder, have written a children's book to help build understanding of these disorders. Peter & Lisa A Mental Illness Children's Story tells the story of Peter and Lisa, friends who, through their mutual friend Trudy, get help for their illnesses and find love in each other.
The simple text and illustrations of Peter & Lisa probably won't win the Katzes any awards. But the Katzes certainly accomplish the goal of the story--to help "children to understand that with the right kind of help mental illness can be treated and people can live normal, healthy, happy lives." To me the most important message is that mental illness is not something that can be treated with will power or pushed through with hard work. Peter and Lisa had community, in their friend Trudy and in each other, and they were willing to get professional help, including in-patient treatment and medication. Hopefully Peter & Lisa will be a tool to remove stigmas from mental illness and encourage those who suffer from mental illnesses, as well as their families and communities, to take steps for treatment and recovery.

'Peter & Lisa' puts the subject of mental illness on the table for discussion and helps children to identify with it. As adults, we are likely to think about the complexities. In contrast, children often need only simple explanations. 'Peter & Lisa' does just that- it strips the subject down to straight forward feelings, thoughts and actions, making it easier for young children to grasp. As a professional who has worked to support families, I like that this book has lots of potential for exploring, thinking and talking. Children who live with mental illness can have opportunities to talk about and understand more about their own experience of it. Children who don't live with mental illness will learn more about it and consider the importance of self awareness, friendship, problem solving and togetherness. While the images are somewhat insipid, the story itself offers much learning-for every child. I appreciated the professionally-done imagery in this children's book, as well as the powerful and well-developed story in its pages. What is more, I appreciated the way this book acted as a companion piece to other books for adults that I have recently encountered on this topic (Linda Katz's own book, Surviving Mental Illness). This reminded me of the way the book Wonder has worked so well with a children's book adaptation.
Each story works well and remarkably on its own.
Literature for young children need not be pigeon-holed into a small number of story types, and this book is evidence of that fact. Real-world issues can be dealt with directly and with grace in children's books, as well as any other book can manage.
The pages are punctuated with lots of dialogue, which will be inviting for young readers, and the images are consistently clear and grab the reader's attention throughout the book. This is the kind of book I would use in a teaching unit on the subject, or as resource to make connections with children about real issues facing individuals in our society.
An inspiring story for children that teaches them about what parents go through when they have a mental illness and how they get better from it. An excellent book, I should know because I helped write it. Parents should read this book to their children. It is educational and not meant to be scary, it is full of humor.
Peter & Lisa, a charming, seemingly simple book for all audiences to understand how difficulties can be worked out is actually a breakthrough.
Nobody I know of has yet come up with such a clever way to describe complex communication issues in such a way that could inspire a reader to partner and model. The illustrations and colors beautifully enhance the message. This little book should be bought by libraries and made known to all audiences involved with mental health issues.
Bravo to Charles & Linda; they are a real team!
